Fundraising underway for construction of a second home
It’s time to start on a second home in Searsport on land the townspeople voted to give to Habitat for that purpose.
While our first partner family is making monthly mortgage payments to the local affiliate, those funds are not enough to fund the construction of a second home. And we have been told by many affiliates that the second home is often the most difficult to accomplish.
We need our community to get behind the building on our second home as they did the first. Are you able to help provide a safe and simple but energy-efficient home for a family that isn’t looking for a hand-out but rather a hand-up?
If you are able and willing to help us in any way, we'd like to hear from you. Below are some of the ways you can help:
Please make checks payable to:Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County
Please mail donations to:

Work begins toward a second build
Searsport steps up big for second Habitat home
Searsport residents voted to donate lot 63A to Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County.
The 5-acre lot has 500 feet of frontage on the Old County Road and is about 500 feet deep on the left side.
Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County is thrilled with the recent news
out of Searsport in March. Residents voted at their annual town meeting
to donate a 5-acre parcel of land to Habitat. The town has owned that
land for more than land for close to 50 years with the construction of a
salt-sand shed eyed for that location originally.
And the news that the group had a site available for its second home was
quickly followed by the pledge from GAC Chemical Corporation.
Board chairman Randy Mailloux said the news has the board excited to start
working on plans for its second home. After the snow clears and workers can
get on the site, tests will be completed to make sure the plot can handle
construction of a house complete with a well and septic system.
Once the site is confirmed to be buildable, the search for a partner family
will begin and fundraising efforts will gear up. If you are interested in being
a partner family, watch the local newspapers for information about how to apply.

Volunteer Build Days:
The LGBTA kicked off our first volunteer build day on August 21st, 2010.

In the photo above, Andrea Walker, head of the publicity committee who wrote the Unity Foundation Grant application, and I were all smiles recently as Larry Sterrs, CEO and Chairman of the Board of the Unity Foundation, signed the deed giving us the land where we will build our first home. We are so grateful. Not only will this donation provide the land for the Johannes home but there is space for two additional homes in the future, including one reserved for a family from the Unity area.
Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County is an all-volunteer organization with many busy individuals giving of their time and energy because they believe in the goals of Habitat. We can always use more help and invite you to join us if you too are excited about the prospect of helping provide decent, safe and affordable housing to working families in our communities.
